Trump Warns Netanyahu Against Escalating Conflict With Iran

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, has warned the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, not to exacerbate the conflict escalation with Iran. The tension escalated last Sunday when Israel bombarded the capital of Lebanon.

"I said, ‘Bibi, you better be careful, or you will be on your own very soon,'" Trump said, as quoted by local Israeli media, as reported by Al Arabiya, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

According to a report by Axios, cited from Al Jazeera, Trump also delivered the same warning to Netanyahu. When he called Netanyahu on Sunday night local time, Trump advised not to retaliate against Iran amid ongoing negotiations.

Separately, Trump is reported to be increasingly irritated by Netanyahu's actions, in a post on his Truth Social platform.

"Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting.' Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE! Final negotiations towards a peace deal are “proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way," wrote Trump.

Tensions in the region escalated on Sunday triggered by Israel's deadly airstrike on the capital of Lebanon. Meanwhile, Iran has long stated that a peace agreement related to the U.S. cannot be separated from the cessation of fighting in Lebanon.

Instead of heeding Trump's warning, on Monday morning local time, Israel launched a retaliatory attack. The Israeli terrorist regime attacked the air defense system and petrochemical plant, followed by Iran's attack on similar facilities in Haifa, near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Although Trump has urged a halt to the mutual attacks, in a statement broadcast by local Israeli TV station, Netanyahu said that Israel has full right to defend itself and we are carrying it out as it should be.

"At present, the fire on this front has been halted, because after the terrorist regime in Tehran was struck, it stopped attacking us," Netanyahu said.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, described the dispute between Trump and Netanyahu as "Sometimes lovers have a spat."

"Although Netanyahu has decided to ease the tension at Trump's request. Yet, the U.S. President understands that Iran's attack on Israel cannot be fully accepted without retaliation," Leiter told Fox News, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Furthermore, the Spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, condemned Washington for the escalation. He demanded the U.S. take responsibility for all forms of ceasefire violations.

"Any action that violates the ceasefire, whether through the blockade of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the attack on southern Lebanon by Israel, or other events, will directly hold the United States responsible for the escalation in the region," Baghaei said.
