TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Australian government announced on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, that it has secured three shipments of jet fuel from China and more agricultural-grade urea from Brunei. Australia's move came against the backdrop of the US-Israel war against Iran that disrupted Canberra's fuel and fertilizer stocks.

Australia said more than 600,000 barrels—equivalent to around 100 million liters of jet fuel—will start arriving early June. This came after discussions between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang.

Beijing has tightened fuel exports since March to safeguard domestic supply after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted the flow of crude oil and fuel.

According to government estimates, the additional jet fuel is equivalent to about 1% of Australia's annual consumption.

Canberra has also secured 38,500 tons of agricultural-grade urea from Brunei to support farmers.

"The additional 600,000 barrels of jet fuel will help keep Australia moving, and the extra fertilizer will help provide certainty to our farmers," Albanese said in a statement as reported by AsiaOne.

The supplies were secured through the new Aus$7.5 billion (approximately Rp94.8 trillion) Fuel and Fertilizer Security Facility. This facility provides loans, guarantees, insurance, and price support for the transportation and agricultural sectors.

Meanwhile, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that the country is working with countries in the region to minimize the crisis' impact on the global economy and ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply.

Australia, which mostly relies on fuel imports, has faced local shortages since the conflict in the Middle East broke out in late February.
