TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the waters west of the Nias Islands, the waters west of the Batu Islands, and the Indian Ocean west of the Nias Islands, North Sumatra, are potentially affected by high waves.

Rizky Ramadhan, a forecaster at the BMKG Belawan Maritime Meteorology Station in Medan, said on Saturday that high waves in these three waters could occur from April 19 to 22, 2026.

"High waves could reach 1.25 to 2.5 meters. These conditions must be monitored as they could disrupt navigation, especially for small boats," he said.

He stated that wind patterns in northern Indonesia generally move from northwest to northeast with wind speeds ranging from 9-15 knots, while in southern Indonesia they generally move from northeast to southeast with wind speeds ranging from 9-15 knots.

Fishermen using small boats are advised to exercise caution when sailing if wind speeds reach 15 knots and waves reach 1.25 meters.

Similarly, those using barges when navigating these three waters should also increase their vigilance if wind speeds reach 16 knots and waves reach 1.5 meters.

Meanwhile, Utami Al Khairiyah, a forecaster for the BMKG Region I, stated that the weather in North Sumatra on Sunday (April 19) morning will be cloudy with the potential for light rain in South Nias, Labuhanbatu, South Labuhanbatu, and the surrounding areas.

From noon to evening, there is potential for light to heavy rain, which could occur fairly evenly across North Sumatra.

Similarly, at night, there is still potential for light to heavy rain, almost evenly distributed throughout North Sumatra, with heavy rain possible in Pakpak Bharat and the surrounding areas.

Then, in the early morning, it will be cloudy with the potential for light rain in Pakpak Bharat, Samsir, North Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli, North Nias, Dairi, Sibolga, Humbang Hasundutan, Gunungsitoli, and the surrounding areas.

The average air temperature is 15 to 33 degrees Celsius, with humidity ranging from 79 to 99 percent, and winds blowing from the east to southwest at 3-6 km per hour.

"Be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain on the west coast, eastern slopes, the east coast, and the mountains of North Sumatra, which could cause flooding, landslides, and other hydrometeorological disasters," said Rizky Ramadhan.
