TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State lender PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) management aims to return Rp28 billion in funds belonging to the St. Fransiscus Assisi Church parish in Aek Nabara, Labuhanbatu Regency, North Sumatra, by the end of this week.
According to BNI Director of Human Capital and Compliance Munadi Herlambang, the resolution follows a law enforcement investigation that has provided clarity regarding the total loss.
"We will complete the resolution within this week. The process is underway, and it is guaranteed that the funds will be returned between Monday and Friday," Munadi stated during a virtual press conference in Jakarta on Sunday, April 19, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Munadi explained that BNI had previously returned an initial Rp7 billion as a gesture of goodwill toward the customers. The remaining reimbursement is being handled with an emphasis on transparency, measurability, and accountability to ensure legal certainty for all parties involved.
The basis for the resolution rests on the findings of the law enforcement investigation, which serves as an objective benchmark for determining the loss value. The fund return mechanism will be documented in a legal agreement signed by both parties.
Furthermore, Munadi disclosed that the case was first uncovered in February 2026 through BNI’s internal supervision. The incident involved individuals who conducted transactions outside the bank's system, exceeding their authority and bypassing official banking procedures.
"The product used in this case is not an official BNI product and was never recorded in BNI’s operational system," Munadi clarified. He assured that all customer funds held in official BNI products remain secure and unaffected by the incident.
BNI Director of Network and Retail Funding Rian Eriana Kaslan stated that the bank will continue to oversee the resolution until it is fully finalized. BNI is also strengthening its internal supervision and enhancing public financial literacy.
"We urge the public to increase vigilance, especially regarding investment offers that do not go through official banking channels," she said.
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) had previously requested that BNI promptly resolve the issues faced by customers at the BNI Aek Nabara Branch Office. In response, OJK summoned BNI’s directors and management to demand an explanation and emphasize that resolution steps must be swift, comprehensive, transparent, and responsible.
Previously, congregants of St. Fransiscus Assisi Church parish demanded that BNI return Rp28 billion in funds deposited at the Aek Nabara branch. Sister Natalia Situmorang, treasurer of the parish credit union funds, stated that a bank official, Andi Hakim Febriansyah, abused his position to offer "BNI Deposito Investment" products with promised interest rates as high as 8 percent per year.
The Catholic parish officials subsequently deposited Rp28 billion sourced from the savings of 1,900 cooperative members. "We later realized that the BNI Deposito Investment was not an official BNI product," Natalia said during a press conference on Friday, April 10, 2026.
