TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf said the government is paying close attention to the safety of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims who have begun their journey amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
As the head of the newly established state institution managing Hajj operations for the first time this year, Irfan said he felt honored to carry out this important mandate.
“But we also cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that this journey takes place amid global dynamics, including increasing conflict in the Middle East. This situation certainly raises concerns for both the government and the families sending off the pilgrims,” he said during the farewell ceremony for pilgrims at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
The Gerindra Party politician said the government continues to coordinate intensively with relevant authorities to ensure that all pilgrims receive the best protection, services, and security during their worship.
“As directed by President Prabowo Subianto, the safety and security of the pilgrims is the top priority,” he said.
Irfan added that the government hopes pilgrims can begin their journey calmly and focus fully on worship, while matters beyond their control will be handled by the state to achieve the best possible outcome.
At Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Irfan saw off the first group of 391 pilgrims from the Cipondoh embarkation point. He said the group was physically and mentally prepared to perform the pilgrimage.
“For pilgrims who are patient, sincere, and full of enthusiasm, Hajj is not only about our relationship with God, but also about how we relate to fellow human beings,” he said.
