TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman stated that the Indonesian government is targeting the revitalization of up to 71,000 schools by 2026. "In 2026, we are aiming for the revitalization of up to 71,000 schools to be built. There are already 11,744 schools that have been budgeted for, and the budget has been prepared through the Ministry's DIPA in 2026," said Dudung while inspecting the revitalization of SMP Muhammadiyah 16, Senen Sub-district, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

The inspection is claimed to ensure that President Prabowo Subianto's priority program in the education sector runs smoothly in the field without any obstacles. Dudung stated that the Presidential Staff Office has been assigned the task of directly monitoring the implementation of the school revitalization program, which is currently one of the government's main agendas.

Dudung stated that he wants to ensure that there are no bureaucratic obstacles hindering the construction process and budget disbursement. According to him, the government wants all students to be able to study in safe and comfortable classrooms.

The school revitalization program in 2025 is said to target 16,167 schools throughout Indonesia. Specifically for the revitalization of SMP Muhammadiyah 16, the government allocated a budget of around Rp1.2 billion. The funds are directly handed over to the school principal to be managed through self-management mechanisms.

In addition to public schools, the revitalization also includes private schools and Islamic schools. Dudung mentioned that more than 1,400 madrasahs (Islamic schools) were revitalized in 2025, and the target is to increase this number to 9,000 madrasahs by 2026.

According to Dudung, the self-management mechanism was chosen so that the construction involves the local community while minimizing the potential for corruption and budget mark up. The revitalization work is carried out by workers from the school's surrounding area.

"So, self-management is carried out by the local workers, so there is no mark up, no corruption; we truly want to build," he said.

He mentioned that the funding source for the revitalization program comes from government budget efficiency. Dudung also mentioned the use of funds from the proceeds of corruption cases to support school construction.

"This is the budget from Mr. President, from efficiency, and then from the confiscation of corruptors' assets, which ultimately benefits our school children," he said.

According to Dudung, the school revitalization program also has an impact on job creation. An average of 24 workers are involved in one school revitalization project. "So, if we total the number of school revitalization projects, which is around 16,139 schools, this program has created around 380,000 job opportunities," he said.

The revitalization carried out not only includes repairing roofs or the physical structures of schools, but also updating learning support facilities. Dudung mentioned that facilities such as desks, chairs, whiteboards, and classroom lighting are also renewed.

"Including furniture, facilities and infrastructure, the whiteboards are already installed, the desks and chairs are exceptional, and the lighting is impressive," he said.

In addition to school revitalization, the government also targets the construction of supporting educational infrastructure, including bridges to schools in remote areas. Dudung stated that the government wants to eliminate the condition where students still have to cross the river using rafts or simple bridges to go to school.
