TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia, erupted six times on Sunday, May 10, 2026, sending volcanic ash plumes more than 1,000 meters above its crater.
The first eruption occurred at 05:38 AM WIT (Eastern Indonesia Time) , with a gray ash plume drifting northwest. Less than an hour later, at 07:05 WIT, the volcano erupted again, this time dispersing ash toward the north and northeast.
At 08:06 AM WIT, the 1,335-meter-high volcano erupted once more, producing ash columns that moved east and southeast. Another eruption followed at 08:51 AM WIT, before further activity was recorded at 12:13 PM WIT.
The volcanic activity continued into the afternoon, with another eruption at 03:13 PM WIT, although no visual ash plume was observed.
“At the time this report was made, the eruption was still ongoing,” said Saum Amin, an officer at the Mount Dukono Volcano Observation Post in a report to the Geological Agency.
Earlier, on Friday, May 8, Mount Dukono erupted and spewed ash as high as 10 kilometers above the crater. The eruption affected climbers in the area, who were later evacuated. Three were found dead.
Since January 2026, Mount Dukono has erupted 108 times, making it one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. Its alert level remains unchanged at Level II, or Caution.
Acting Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria urged the public to avoid areas within a four-kilometer radius of the Malupang and Warirang craters. She also advised residents to wear masks outdoors to protect against volcanic ash.
“Considering that periodic ash eruptions occur and ash dispersal follows wind direction and speed, the affected area is not fixed,” Lana said.
