TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, Indoneia, erupted on Saturday morning, May 30, 2026. The eruption occurred at 08:42 local time with an ash column reaching around 2,000 meters above the volcano's peak.
Ahmad Rifandi, the Mount Marapi Volcano Monitoring Post (PGA) officer, reported that the observed height of the ash column reached approximately 4,891 meters above sea level. He stated in a written report on Saturday, May 30, 2026, "The observed ash column is grayish in color with thick intensity and tilts towards the northeast."
According to him, the eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30 millimeters and a duration of about 1 minute 25 seconds. Only one eruption quake was recorded throughout the day.
Mount Marapi, located in the Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, is currently at level II alert or cautionary alert. Therefore, residents and tourists are requested not to enter or engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the eruption center or Verbeek Crater.
Ahmad Rifandi also reminded residents living around the valleys and river streams originating from Mount Marapi to be cautious of the potential for cold lava floods, especially during heavy rainfall. He stated, 'The threat of cold lava floods can occur at any time during the rainy season, so people need to increase their vigilance.'
In addition, residents affected by ash rain are advised to use nose and mouth cover masks to reduce the risk of respiratory tract disturbances. People are also requested to use eye and skin protection, secure a clean water supply, and clean up the volcanic ash that accumulates on the roofs to avoid the risk of building collapses.
Since the major eruption at the end of 2023, Mount Marapi continues to show fluctuating volcanic activities with periodic eruptions. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency, continues to monitor the development of the volcano's activities and will update recommendations according to the field conditions.
