TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The bilateral ties between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are not affected by Abu Dhabi's exit from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured.

"The UAE's policy does not affect the bilateral relations that have been established, as well as the strategic cooperation between Indonesia and the UAE," said ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Indonesia viewed UAE's decision as part of the dynamic global energy governance, while hoping that the change will not disrupt the global energy market and supply stability.

"The Indonesian government will continue to thoroughly monitor the situation and its implications for the national economy and energy security," she said.

Why did UAE depart from OPEC?

The UAE had previously announced its withdrawal from OPEC and OPEC+ effective from May 1, 2026, citing priority to national interests and adjustment to the country's long-term energy policy direction.

As reported by Al Jazeera, in a statement released by state media, the decision reflects the "the UAE’s long-term strategic and economic vision and evolving energy profile."

The statement also affirmed that during its membership in OPEC, the UAE had made significant contributions, but the government believes it is now time to focus its efforts on what the country's "national interest dictates."

"During our time in the organization, we made significant contributions and even greater sacrifices for the benefit of all," the statement read.

Implications for OPEC and the Energy Market

According to the same report, the departure of the UAE, which has been a long-standing member of OPEC, has the potential to weaken the organization's solidarity. This move is considered to have the potential to disrupt the balance amid OPEC's efforts to maintain unity, especially regarding geopolitical issues and production quotas.

UAE Energy Minister Suhail Mohamed al-Mazrouei stated that the decision was made after a comprehensive evaluation of the current and future energy policies. "This is a policy decision. It has been done after a careful look at current and future policies related to level of production," he said. He also emphasized that the decision was not consulted with other countries, including Saudi Arabia.
