TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs is set to hold an isbat session to determine the beginning of Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah for Eid al-Adha on Sunday afternoon, May 17, 2026.
The isbat session, coinciding with the 29th of Zulkaidah 1447 Hijriah, will take place at the HM Rasjidi Auditorium, the Ministry of Religious Affairs office in Jakarta.
The Director of Islamic Religious Affairs and Sharia Development, Arsad Hidayat, stated that the session will be divided into three parts. First, a seminar on the position of the hilal for the beginning of Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah at 4:30 PM and open to the public. Second, the isbat session at 6:00 PM or after the maghrib prayer and will be closed. Third, a press conference to announce the results of the isbat session at 7:00 PM.
The preparation for the isbat session for the beginning of Zulhijah 1447 Hijriah was discussed during the Digital Meeting for the Consolidation and Preparation of Rukyatulhilal by the officials of the Islamic Religious Affairs and Islamic Guidance in all provinces of Indonesia on May 5, 2026.
Arsad Hidayat mentioned that cross-institutional coordination is an important part of ensuring the successful, measured, and accountable implementation of rukyatulhilal, both in terms of Sharia compliance and administratively.
"The implementation of rukyatulhilal is not just a routine annual agenda, but part of religious services to the community. Therefore, coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Religious Courts, Islamic organizations, and all relevant parties needs to be continuously strengthened," stated Arsad in his official statement on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Arsad explained that the early rukyatulhilal for Zulhijah of this year will take place at 88 observation points across various regions of Indonesia. It is hoped that all these points will support the implementation of the isbat session that will be held today.
He stated that the government continues to prioritize the isbat session mechanism as a joint consultation forum in determining the beginning of the Hijriah month. This approach is considered a characteristic of Indonesia in managing religious diversity in a dialogical and moderate manner.
"The government has a basis for astronomical calculation and the criteria of imkanur rukyat according to MABIMS," said Arsad. "However, before being announced to the public, all data and input are discussed together in the isbat session so that the resulting decision can be a collective reference."
Arsad mentioned that Minister of Religious Affairs Regulation Number 1 of 2026 concerning the Organization of Isbat Sessions is an important foundation in strengthening the governance of determining the beginning of the Hijriah month. He stated that the regulation emphasizes the isbat session as an official government forum involving various elements, ranging from Islamic organizations, astronomical experts, academics, to relevant state institutions.
During the coordination meeting, several regions also reported their readiness for the implementation of rukyatulhilal. For example, the South Sulawesi Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs reported that rukyatulhilal will be centralized at the observatory of the Muslim University of Indonesia in Makassar, involving the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Religious Courts, and Islamic organizations.
Meanwhile, the North Kalimantan Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs reported that the rukyatulhilal will be conducted in Tarakan City involving BMKG, Religious Courts, Islamic organizations, and various community elements. Then, the West Sulawesi Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs assured that the hilal observation will still be carried out in Mamuju District, albeit in a simple manner.
Reports on the readiness for rukyatulhilal were also submitted from several other regions, including North Maluku, Central Sulawesi, and various areas in eastern Indonesia. The majority of regions have coordinated with local BMKG and Religious Courts to ensure the smooth and orderly implementation of rukyatulhilal.
