TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Iranian military has launched a missile attack on the US forces in retaliation for the US' attack on a tanker. This was revealed by Iran's national television report on Thursday, May 7, 2026, as reported by Antara, citing military sources.
The Iran Headquarters of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Command added, as reported by Al Jazeera, that the US also violated the ceasefire by conducting airstrikes in civilian areas, including Qeshm Island. Iran accused that the attack was “in cooperation with some regional countries," without specifying the names of those countries.
“The American aggressor, terrorist and bandit army, violating the ceasefire, targeted an Iranian oil tanker," the statement read. The statement also claimed that Iran's response caused "significant damage" to US vessels.
The previous day, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed that its forces had disabled an Iranian-flagged oil tanker around the Gulf of Oman.
After facing Iranian fire in the Strait of Hormuz and sustaining damage, the US vessels withdrew, the report said, without detailing when this occurred.
However, CENTCOM stated that they “intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks” and responded with "self-defense strikes."
"No US assets were hit," it claimed.
The clashes mark Iran's first military response to the US blockade of its ports. Over the past few weeks, the US military has seized several Iranian vessels and ordered dozens of others to change course.
The US navy blockade has been the spearhead of Trump's pressure campaign against Iran since the ceasefire was put in place last month.
Attack in Tehran
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the sound of explosions was reported in western Tehran, with the Mehr news agency confirming the operation of the city's air defense system.
The US was also reported to have carried out attacks on Qeshm Port and the city of Bandar Abbas, according to Fox News, citing senior US military officials.
However, the US claimed that the attacks they conducted were not intended to restart the war.
The US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on February 28, resulting in damage to infrastructure and civilian casualties, including the death of the then supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
On April 7, Washington and Tehran agreed to a ceasefire, but subsequent talks in Islamabad have failed to produce any tangible results toward peace.
US President Donald Trump then extended the ceasefire to give Iran more time to prepare a "joint proposal."
The escalation has led to almost a complete halt in maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a key route for the shipment of oil and LNG from the Persian Gulf countries to the global market.
As a result of the disruption, oil prices have skyrocketed across many nations.
