TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Manchester City continued to closely trail Arsenal in the race for the English Premier League title after defeating Brentford 3-0 in the 36th week at Etihad Stadium on Saturday local time, May 9, 2026. City's victory came through goals from Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland, and Omar Marmoush.

The additional three points kept Pep Guardiola's team in second place in the current standings with 74 points from 35 matches, trailing Arsenal by two points at the top of the table. Conversely, Brentford remained at the eighth position with 51 points from 36 games, now two points behind the top seven zone.

City immediately dominated from the start of the match. The first chance came through a header by Haaland, but it missed the target. The Norwegian striker once again threatened with a powerful shot that was still managed to be secured by Brentford goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher.

In the second half, Brentford exerted pressure through Igor Thiago. However, the opportunity was thwarted by City's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The deadlock finally broke in the 60th minute. Jeremy Doku gave City a 1-0 lead after exploiting a gap in Brentford's defense. The home team's lead increased in the 75th minute. Haaland scored City's second goal after seizing a rebound in front of the goal.

Towards the end of the match, Omar Marmoush sealed City's 3-0 victory. He latched onto Haaland's pass in the 90+2nd minute to ensure The Citizens' dominance at the Etihad.

Meanwhile, Manchester United failed to secure a victory after being held to a goalless draw by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Despite several opportunities created by Michael Carrick's team, the tight Sunderland defense resulted in the match ending without a goal.

The draw kept Manchester United in third place in the current standings with 65 points from 36 matches. Sunderland occupied the 12th position with 48 points, trailing five points behind the European competition zone.

In another match, Brighton & Hove Albion convincingly won 3-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Amex Stadium. Brighton secured the victory through goals from Jack Hinshelwood, Lewis Dunk, and Yankuba Minteh. This result lifted Brighton to the seventh position with 53 points from 36 matches. Meanwhile, Wolves remained at the bottom of the table with 18 points.

AFC Bournemouth also secured an important victory by defeating Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage, London. Bournemouth's lone goal was scored by Rayan in the 53rd minute. This victory kept Bournemouth in the sixth position with 55 points, trailing by just three points from the Champions League zone. Fulham dropped to the 11th position with 48 points.

In another match, Liverpool was held to a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Anfield. Liverpool quickly took the lead through Ryan Gravenberch in the sixth minute after utilizing Rio Ngumoha's pass. The home team almost doubled the lead through Virgil van Dijk, but the opportunity failed to result in a goal.

Chelsea then equalized in the 35th minute through Enzo Fernandez's free-kick. The goal kept the score at 1-1 until halftime.

In the second half, Chelsea briefly turned the tables through Cole Palmer. However, the goal was disallowed by the referee due to offside. Liverpool also had a golden opportunity through Dominik Szoboszlai, but his shot hit the goal post.

The draw kept Liverpool in the fourth position with 59 points and secured their spot in the Champions League next season. Chelsea remained in ninth place with 49 points, trailing by two points from the European competition zone.
