TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Taman Safari Indonesia will participate in the auction process for the management of Kebun Binatang Bandung, also known as Bandung Zoo. The Chief Executive Officer of Taman Safari Indonesia, Aswin Sumampau, said the management of a conservation institution is not merely an operational matter, but also a long-term responsibility related to animal welfare, public education, regulatory compliance, and institutional sustainability.
“Therefore, the management process must be carried out wisely, carefully, and by prioritizing conservation interests,” Aswin said in a statement on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Taman Safari has participated in the initial stages of the auction facilitated by the Bandung City Government and attended the market sounding forum. Aswin expressed hope that the auction process would run transparently, accountably, and provide equal opportunities for parties with the capacity and commitment to professionally and sustainably manage the conservation institution.
Taman Safari sees Bandung Zoo as having strategic potential to develop into a modern conservation institution with international standards, while maintaining its historical value and close connection with the people of Bandung.
The Bandung City Government, through its official Instagram account, announced the auction process on Wednesday afternoon, May 6, 2026. In its statement, the city government opened opportunities for cooperation in the utilization of regional assets in the Bandung Zoo area. The cooperation object consists of land and buildings under a utilization cooperation scheme (KSP). The site is intended for wildlife conservation integrated with green open spaces, public recreation, and education. The cooperation period is offered for 26 years.
In addition to Taman Safari, the management of Gembira Loka Zoo Yogyakarta has also expressed interest in joining the auction for Bandung Zoo management. The zoo sent representatives to Bandung to attend a presentation on the auction plan on April 13, 2026.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Gembira Loka Zoo, Tirtodiprojo, the auction was expected to be publicly announced through the Bandung City Regional Financial and Asset Management Agency (BKAD) after the forum. “We were told to keep checking, but until now no announcement has been opened,” he said when contacted by Tempo on Tuesday.
Before deciding to participate in the auction, Tirto said they wanted clarity on whether Bandung Zoo’s legal issues had been resolved, including land ownership matters. He also questioned the certainty regarding asset claims by the Bandung City Government, employees, and the legal status of the animals.
“Protected animals belong to the government, but who owns the unprotected animals?” he said.
According to the auction schedule signed by Bandung City Secretary Iskandar Zulkarnain on May 5, 2026, the tender announcement is scheduled to be made twice, on May 5 and May 8. The collection of tender documents at the land utilization service unit office of the Regional Financial and Asset Management Agency at Bandung City Hall is set for May 7-12.
The tender explanation session is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at a hotel on Jalan Cihampelas. Submission of bid documents will be open from May 18-21, while the appointment of the Bandung Zoo manager is scheduled for May 25.
