TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok is the first platform to yield to Indonesia's child protection law by shutting down 1.7 million underage accounts, according to Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid.
Meutya expressed her appreciation for TikTok's move to implement the law that entered into effect on March 28, 2026.
"TikTok is the first to report the numbers of deactivations and the first to demonstrate that its commitment is followed up by tangible actions," Meutya said in a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.
In a meeting between TikTok and the Ministry of Communication and Digital, it was reported that TikTok had closed 1.7 million child accounts as of April 28, 2026. This number has increased significantly since April 10, 2026, when TikTok closed 780,000 child accounts.
The deactivation of children's accounts did impact some TikTok accounts belonging to adult users, but Meutya hopes the public will support this measure to protect the nation's future generations.
"There may have been a slight disruption yesterday, which I hope you understand, as this is also for the protection of our children," the minister said.
TikTok told Meutya that adult users affected by the measure are eligible for appeal, allowing their accounts to be reactivated as soon as possible.
Besides shutting down accounts of children under 16, Meutya said TikTok has also presented a more detailed and measurable action plan going forward.
TikTok, represented by Helena Lersch, Vice President of Global Public Policy, also expressed its commitment to cracking down on digital crimes targeting Indonesia, such as online gambling.
Meutya said the child protection law (dubbed PP Tunas, or Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Protecting Children) applies to all e-commerce platforms.
Therefore, the Indonesian government expects these platforms to move beyond commitments and implement concrete actions like those taken by TikTok.
