TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Customs and Excise Office at Soekarno-Hatta (Soetta) Airport has addressed a viral social media video showing a woman crying during an inspection of her Pokémon cards. Customs officials stated that the examination was conducted in accordance with regulations.
Under Finance Ministerial Regulation No. 34 of 2025, all imported goods brought by passengers must be reported to officers. Soekarno-Hatta Customs explained that on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, officers examined the baggage of a passenger identified as JES, who had just arrived from abroad.
"The inspection was carried out as a follow-up to X-Ray indications showing a large quantity of Pokémon cards inside the passenger's suitcase," according to a statement from the official Instagram account @bcsoetta on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
After a thorough examination, officers detected strong indications that the goods were part of an informal personal importer service, known locally as jasa titipan (jastip). This suspicion was based on travel data showing the passenger had made frequent trips abroad in close succession. Additionally, officers monitored foreign shopping offers posted on the passenger's social media accounts.
Officers then verified the purchase and intended use with the passenger. Soekarno-Hatta Airport Customs noted that a single Pokémon card can be valued from Rp100,000 to Rp100 million, with some rare cards reaching Rp1.5 billion.
The passenger claimed the items were gifts or souvenirs rather than commercial goods for trade. She also presented purchase invoices to the officers during the verification process.
According to regulations, passengers are entitled to a customs duty exemption for personal goods valued up to US$500 per person. However, this facility does not apply if the items are categorized as commercial goods.
