TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Southeast Asian leaders are expected to reach an agreement on joint steps to navigate the impact of conflict in the Middle East on the region at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, this week.
As reported by ANTARA, the director general of the ASEAN 2026 national organizing body (NOC), Hellen De La Vega, said in a press conference on Tuesday that Southeast Asian leaders would focus their dialogue on food and energy security as well as the safe movement of ASEAN people outside the region.
On the same occasion, the acting head of the Philippine Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Dave Gomez, said that disaster resilience would also be a focus at the 48th ASEAN Summit.
"Disaster resilience is part of the agenda under which ASEAN member states commit to collaborative frameworks that enhance community-based early warning systems, rapid humanitarian response, and support for affected populations," Gomez said.
Thus, it is hoped that when facing a disaster, such as the one faced by the Philippines during the eruption of Mount Mayon this time, the steps taken will not cause the affected community to suffer even more.
"But instead drive inclusive, people-oriented, people-centered resilience strategies among member states across the region," said the PCO Philippines chair.
The issue is expected to be a focus of the ASEAN Summit and coincides with the Philippine government's determination to respond fully to the impact of the Mount Mayon eruption in the Bicol region.
Furthermore, De La Vega stated that as the ASEAN chairperson, the Philippines will continue to promote discussions on economic resilience, peace and security, and human empowerment in the region.
Manila, he said, will optimize the ASEAN Summit to reaffirm norms and dialogue on security, regional stability, maritime cooperation, and digital transformation, while strengthening intra-ASEAN trade and investment.
"These strategic priorities will contribute to a successful inaugural year for the ASEAN Vision 2045 under our chairship," De La Vega said.
The 48th ASEAN Summit will open on Friday, May 8, 2026, preceded by a senior officials' meeting on May 6-7, 2026.
