TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Arsenal successfully secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal at the Emirates Stadium on the early hours of Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Bukayo Saka's lone goal at the end of the first half became the decider for The Gunners' advancement to the final.
From the early minutes, both teams played aggressively. Arsenal dominated ball possession, while Atletico relied on physical play and Diego Simeone's typical fast counterattacks.
A controversial moment occurred in the 35th minute when Leandro Trossard was brought down inside the penalty box. Arsenal players immediately surrounded referee Daniel Siebert, but the official remained unmoved and decided to continue the game.
The stalemate was broken in the 44th minute. A loose ball inside the penalty box was well utilized by Saka. Calmly, he slotted the ball past Atletico's goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who could not fend it off. The score remained 1-0 until halftime.
Entering the second half, the intensity of the match increased. Atletico attempted to respond by making several substitutions, including bringing on Thiago Almada and Alex Baena to increase their attacking threat.
On the other hand, Mikel Arteta also rotated his squad. Martin Odegaard, Noni Madueke, and Gabriel Martinelli were introduced to maintain the tempo of the game. A golden opportunity came Arsenal's way in the 66th minute through Viktor Gyokeres, but his shot narrowly sailed over the crossbar.
The game then heated up in the closing minutes. Several yellow cards were issued, including to Riccardo Calafiori and Koke. Even Arteta and Simeone were cautioned with yellow cards for being too vocal in protesting the referee's decisions from the sidelines.
Statistically, Arsenal indeed had slightly more dominance. Mikel Arteta's team controlled 53 percent of the possession, compared to Atletico's 47 percent. In terms of chances, Arsenal was also more active with 13 attempts, while Atletico had only nine.
As the final whistle blew, Atletico Madrid failed to find an equalizing goal. Arsenal closed the game with a 2-1 aggregate victory over the Spanish club. They now await the winner between Bayern Munich and PSG.
