Bekasi Train Crash Prompts Consumer Group to Demand Safety Reform

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) is pushing for improvements to the system and consumer protection following the fatal train crash that occurred in East Bekasi on Monday, April 27, 2026. YLKI is highlighting vulnerable consumer groups, namely women, who were victims of the incident.

"YLKI is pushing for an evaluation of facilities and safety standards in train carriages, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and people with disabilities," said Rio Priambodo, YLKI's Executive Director, in a press release on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

Rio stated that the placement of women-only carriages at the front and rear needs to be reviewed from a safety perspective. YLKI is also pushing for improvements to the railway system, including separating long-distance and commuter trains, to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

According to YLKI, consumer safety is a basic right that the state and businesses must guarantee. "This incident must be a momentum for comprehensive reform of the public transportation safety system in Indonesia," Rio said.

The Indonesian Railways Association (YLKI) questioned the reliability of the infrastructure and safety systems employed by the operator, in this case PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). YLKI believes this accident demonstrates potential weaknesses in the early warning and safety systems that should have been able to mitigate accidents. YLKI also requested that the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) immediately complete its investigation into the accident.

YLKI demanded several things. One of them was that victim care must be a top priority. This care includes optimal medical care, physical and psychological recovery, and accountability for the victims.

YLKI also demanded certainty and expedited compensation for all victims, both injured and deceased, without complicated processes.

Regarding railway system improvements, YLKI emphasized the importance of a comprehensive evaluation of the railway crossing system, as well as the provision of transparent and prompt information to consumers who have purchased tickets. This information includes departure status, rescheduling, and refunds.

The death toll from the collision between the Argo Bromo Anggrek train on the Gambir-Surabaya Pasar Turi route and the Commuter Line (KRL) train on the Kampung Bandan-Cikarang route has so far reached 15. The incident occurred at East Bekasi Station, Bekasi City, on Monday, April 27, 2026, at approximately 8:57 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, announced the latest death toll based on data collected as of Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 8:00 AM WIB. "There are 15 deaths," Budi said.

Officers took 10 bodies to the Kramat Jati National Police Hospital for identification. Three bodies are at the Bekasi Regional General Hospital (RSUD), one at Bella General Hospital, and one at Mitra Keluarga Hospital, East Bekasi.

Meanwhile, the number of victims with minor and serious injuries has increased to 84. Officers have evacuated all victims to various nearby health facilities for further medical treatment.

Officers have also secured the belongings of the passengers affected by the incident. Officers will collect and process these items in coordination with the police to support further victim identification.

All of the deceased and injured victims were identified as commuter train passengers. Meanwhile, all 240 passengers on the Argo Bromo Anggrek train were safely evacuated.

The incident began when the commuter line train stopped on track 1 at East Bekasi Station. The train stopped due to interference on the opposite track following a collision between the train and a taxi.

Shortly thereafter, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train, which came from behind, struck the train. The collision severely damaged the train's hull, particularly the women's carriage.
