TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A fireworks factory explosion that occurred on Monday, May 4, in central China's Hunan Province killed 26 people and injured 61 others, local authorities said at a press conference on Tuesday, May 5.
Changsha Mayor Chen Bozhang expressed his condolences to the victims and apologized to their families, affected residents, and the entire community.
"We are deeply grieved and filled with remorse," he said, quoted by Xinhua.
Before the press conference began, attendees observed a moment of silence for the victims.
The explosion occurred on Monday at approximately 04:43 PM local time at a factory owned by the Huasheng fireworks manufacturing and display company in Liuyang, a county-level city under the administration of Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province.
So far, rescue efforts are nearly complete, and environmental indicators from real-time air and water monitoring are normal.
The person responsible for the company has been detained by police, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
All fireworks manufacturing companies in Liuyang have suspended production and are currently undergoing rectification, according to the press conference.
Liuyang is a leading fireworks manufacturing hub in China.
