TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of posts have been circulating on Instagram [archive], Facebook, and TikTok claiming that President Prabowo Subianto received a special invitation to facilitate dialogue between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The posts, which appeared on April 24, 2026, feature a visual of Prabowo with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei died after the United States (US) and Israel attacked him on February 28, 2026. The invitation is claimed to reflect Indonesia's increasingly important position in global geopolitics due to its economic stability and active and neutral diplomacy.
However, is it true that Iran invited Prabowo, demonstrating its strengthening position in global geopolitics?
FACT CHECK
Tempo sought confirmation from the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Indonesia and compared the information with credible reports. The verification results indicate that there was no specific invitation for the Indonesian government to mediate dialogue between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The mediator in the peace talks between the US and Iran last April was actually Pakistan. Iran accepted Pakistan as a mediator after observing the country's efforts to promote a ceasefire in the region. Pakistan engaged in direct dialogue with the Iranian government to encourage a halt to attacks and a return to the negotiating table.
Pakistan also approached the US to persuade Washington to open negotiations with Tehran. However, the first round of talks on April 12 in Islamabad ended without an agreement after nearly 21 hours. Plans for a second round of talks are currently being explored.
President Prabowo Subianto did offer to mediate between Iran, the United States, and Israel in early March. Ali Pahlevani Rad, Iran's Assistant Ambassador to Indonesia, expressed his appreciation for Indonesia's goodwill and readiness. Iran views Indonesia as an independent country with great potential to play a crucial role in restoring peace in the region.
However, Ali stated that this role still requires effective and concrete steps to restore peace and end the United States and Israel's aggression against Iran.
"This step means standing on the right side of history, an approach that Indonesia has consistently adopted since its independence in 1945, in defending truth and justice," Ali said in a written statement on Monday, May 4, 2026.
Ali added that Iran wants to use diplomatic instruments to achieve its national security and goals. Tehran urged the United States to respect these goals and cease hostilities to restore stability in the Middle East.
Iran Invites Prabowo in 2025
Iran invited President Prabowo Subianto in 2025 to strengthen bilateral relations. According to Tempo, Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi presented the invitation to the palace during the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Boroujerdi said Prabowo promised to plan a trip to Tehran, but the plan has not yet been realized.
