TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A post claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin was taking a dig at the stance of several Muslim leaders toward Iran and Palestine has been circulating on Instagram [archive] and Facebook since April 12, 2026. The content features a photo of Putin along with text that cites no source.
The caption claims that Putin’s criticism is directed at the United Arab Emirates and other Muslim nations that have joined the United States (US) and Israel in opposing Iran. “It’s heartbreaking. You who claim to be believers are actually allying yourselves with the occupiers. Where were you when Palestine, Lebanon, and Iran were being oppressed?” the caption reads.
But did Putin really criticize Muslim leaders for failing to defend Iran and Palestine during the war?
FACT CHECK
Tempo’s Fact Check Team verified the claim by reviewing credible news reports and interviewing experts in international relations. The findings show that Russian President Vladimir Putin has never made any remarks alluding to the context of Iran’s war against the United States and Israel.
Tempo used the keyword “Putin statement on Iran war” to search for Putin’s statements regarding the Iran war from March 1 to April 12, 2026. The search results show the opposite. According to TRT and Anadolu Agency on March 11, 2026, Putin called UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss the impact of the Iran-U.S. war.
During the conversation, Putin wished Nahyan a happy 65th birthday and praised his role in strengthening the strategic partnership between Moscow and Abu Dhabi. Putin expressed his satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations in all areas. He also thanked Nahyan for the UAE’s continued assistance to Russian citizens.
In addition to the UAE, Putin discussed the Middle East crisis with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman by phone on April 2, 2026. The two leaders called for a swift cessation of hostilities and an intensification of diplomatic efforts toward a long-term resolution that respects the legitimate interests of all parties.
Putin and the Saudi crown prince emphasized the importance of sustained coordination within the OPEC+ framework. Both highlighted the roles of Russia and Saudi Arabia in stabilizing the global oil market.
Radityo Dharmaputra, Head of the Center for European and Eurasian Studies at Airlangga University, affirmed that Putin had never made any statements or remarks directed at Muslim or Arab leaders. “There are no such statements from Putin,” he told Tempo on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
CONCLUSION
Tempo’s verification concludes that the claim that Putin criticized Muslim leaders for failing to defend Iran and Palestine in the war is false.
