Indonesia Grants Zero Import Tariffs for Export E-Commerce

Sedang Trending 1 jam yang lalu

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Trade Ministry said export-oriented e-commerce merchants could benefit from zero import tariffs in partner countries under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

“This access is what we have made available through our trade partner countries,” Fajarini Puntodewi said at the MSIG Tower in Central Jakarta on Monday, May 11, 2026.

Fajarini said CEPA is part of Indonesia’s broader strategy to expand export markets and strengthen international trade partnerships.

Unlike conventional trade agreements that mainly cover goods, she explained that CEPA also includes trade in services. Under the agreement, Indonesian products exported to partner countries can enter with zero percent import tariffs and without additional excise duties.

Indonesia has signed CEPA agreements covering goods and services with six countries: Japan, Canada, Australia, South Korea, Peru, and Chile. A similar agreement with the European Union is currently undergoing ratification.

Fajarini said duty-free access could improve the competitiveness of Indonesian products in overseas markets. She compared Indonesia’s position with China, which has not yet secured a comparable trade agreement with the European Union covering both goods and services.

“For example, products sold through Alibaba from China are still subject to import duties, while products from Indonesian sellers on TikTok are not. That makes Indonesian goods more competitive,” she said.

Fajarini described e-commerce as a growing economic opportunity that enables businesses to market products more easily across borders. She said failing to maximize the sector would mean missing a major opportunity for export growth.

She noted that China currently records the world’s highest e-commerce transaction value, reaching US$2.2 trillion, or roughly 34 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP).

She also cited countries with rapidly growing digital economies and e-commerce sectors, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil.

According to Fajarini, Indonesia’s e-commerce sector is among the fastest-growing in Southeast Asia.
