TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono hopes for a more positive path forward after Myanmar pardoned political detainees and moved Aung San Suu Kyi to house arrest.
At the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) in Cebu, Philippines, on Thursday, Sugiono highlighted the new Myanmar government's efforts to communicate with all parties and stakeholders in the country.
"It's a step in a positive direction," he said in a written statement received by Antara in Jakarta.
Sugiono said Indonesia and other partners in ASEAN welcome the positive developments coming from Myanmar.
Indonesia also called for the new Myanmar government to continue working with ASEAN to restore national stability, reduce hostilities and war, and ensure the distribution of humanitarian aid.
"Therefore, we, as ASEAN, will work together to assist Myanmar in the process of restoring stability," Sugiono said.
On the same occasion, Sugiono also encouraged strengthening ASEAN cooperation in addressing the impact of the conflict in the Middle East and the shared challenges currently faced.
"In an increasingly uncertain world, ASEAN remains a trusted, stable, and reliable partner," Sugiono said.
He emphasized Indonesia's commitment to supporting Timor-Leste's integration into the organization following its official acceptance as a full member of ASEAN.
The AMM in Cebu on Thursday was held as part of a series of events leading up to the 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings.
The meeting, held under the Philippines' ASEAN Chairship, was themed "Navigating Our Future, Together," with a focus on discussing a joint response to the situation in the Middle East and its potential impact on the region.
Sugiono will accompany Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the 48th ASEAN Summit on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Throughout the series of meetings, Indonesia will continue to promote ASEAN unity and centrality in building regional resilience and ensuring food and energy security.
