TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran has exempted several nations, including Russia, from transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran's Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, in a statement to RIA Novosti as reported by Antara.

First Deputy Speaker of the Iranian parliament, Hamid Reza Haji Babaei, noted on Thursday that the country has, for the first time, generated income from Hormuz crossing fees, with funds already transferred to the national central bank.

"We've currently provided exceptions for some countries, but I don't know what will happen in the future. However, our foreign ministry is currently trying to implement the exceptions envisioned for friendly countries, such as Russia," said Ambassador Kazem Jalali.

Iran announced the fee implementation following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel, justifying the tolls as necessary for the cost of securing the strategic waterway. Tehran has currently closed the Strait of Hormuz until the U.S. Navy’s blockade is fully lifted.

The United States and Israel previously launched attacks on Iranian targets on February 28, resulting in infrastructure damage and civilian casualties.

The U.S. and Israeli aggression effectively paralyzed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for oil and liquefied natural gas supplies moving from Gulf nations to the global market.

This situation has significantly hampered both oil production and exports across the region.

On April 7, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire, which led to diplomatic discussions in Islamabad; however, those talks concluded without a resolution.

Following the failure to reach an agreement, the United States declared its intention to blockade vessels entering and exiting Iranian ports. Tehran retaliated by once again closing the Strait of Hormuz.
