Japan to Halt Weapons Component Exports if Used for Aggression

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Japanese government will take measures, including suspending the supply of weapons components, if Japanese weapons exported to other countries are used for aggression against a third country, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Tuesday, as quoted by ANTARA.

"If it is confirmed that a recipient country is using equipment provided by Japan, for example, to commit aggression against another country, Japan will strictly demand that the country rectify the situation, including ceasing the use of the defense equipment," Koizumi told the Japanese parliament.

Such efforts could include suspending the supply of spare parts needed for weapons maintenance and repair, Koizumi explained. Tokyo will also monitor storage conditions, security measures, and procedures in case of loss.

"The government will obligate recipient countries to use the transferred defense equipment and technology in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and to obtain Japan's prior consent for off-label use or transfer to third countries," he explained.

In April 2026, the Japanese government lifted restrictions on arms exports, effectively opening up the possibility of supplying any weapons, including lethal weapons, to third countries.

However, these weapons can only be supplied to countries that have defense equipment and technology transfer agreements with Japan. Supplies to countries in conflict are generally considered impossible, but exceptions may be permitted in special cases.
