TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester United secured three points after defeating Brentford 2-1 in matchweek 34 of the Premier League 2025/2026 at Old Trafford, early Tuesday morning, April 28, 2026. The home team dominated from the start, building high pressure that forced Brentford's defense to work hard to contain Red Devils' attacks.
The first opportunity came through an individual play by Kobbie Mainoo, who passed several opponents before delivering a pass to Amad Diallo. However, Amad's shot was blocked by Nathan Collins. The opening goal finally came in the 11th minute. Starting from a corner kick, Harry Maguire won an aerial duel and directed the ball towards the near post. Casemiro, unmarked, immediately headed the ball to give Manchester United a 1-0 lead.
Brentford responded quickly. Igor Thiago almost equalized in the 16th minute, but his shot hit the post. Shortly after, goalkeeper Senne Lammens made an important save from Keane Lewis-Potter's chance. The back and forth continued until the end of the first half. Brentford threatened through Mikkel Damsgaard, but Lammens was once again alert under the bar.
Manchester United's second goal came in the 42nd minute. A swift counterattack led by Bruno Fernandes was well finished by Benjamin Sesko. The score remained 2-0 until halftime.
Entering the second half, the team led by Michael Carrick chose to play more pragmatically, relying on counterattacks. Conversely, Brentford increased the intensity of their pressure to chase the deficit. The tempo of the game briefly slowed in the middle of the second half. Manchester United made changes by bringing on Mason Mount and Leny Yoro.
Brentford finally reduced the deficit in the 88th minute. Mathias Jensen scored a goal with a powerful shot from outside the penalty box that Lammens couldn't stop. However, until the final whistle, the score remained 2-1, securing a victory for Manchester United. The additional three points solidify their position at the top of the standings.
Arsenal Returns to the Top of the Table
Meanwhile, Arsenal reclaimed the top spot in the temporary standings after defeating Newcastle United 1-0 in matchweek 34. Mikel Arteta's team now has 73 points from 34 matches, leading by three points over Manchester City, who are in second place and still have one postponed match.
Prior to this, Manchester City continued to apply pressure after securing a narrow victory against Burnley. This situation momentarily put Arsenal under pressure in the title race. Despite returning to the top, Arsenal's position is not entirely secure. The narrow points difference and remaining schedule indicate that the title competition is expected to continue until the final matchweek.
In the Champions League zone, the competition for the top four becomes increasingly intense. Liverpool climbed to third place after a 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace. Liverpool has 58 points, the same as Manchester United and Aston Villa, but The Reds have a goal difference advantage for the time being.
Outside the top four, Brighton & Hove Albion moved up to sixth place after a 3-0 win against Chelsea. This result opens up the competition for European qualification.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers remain at the bottom with 17 points. Burnley is in 19th place with 20 points, while Tottenham Hotspur is stuck in 18th place, the relegation zone, with 34 points. The competition at the top and bottom of the Premier League standings this season is determined to be intense until the end of the competition.
