On Sunday, an armed robbery targeting the Berekum Chelsea football team resulted in the death of winger Dominic Frimpong, dilansir dari The Guardian. The incident occurred as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match. Frimpong, 20, succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack.

According to the club's account, six individuals wearing masks and carrying guns and assault rifles blocked the road. As the team's bus attempted to retreat, the assailants fired shots, with one striking Frimpong in the head. The Ghana Football Association confirmed Frimpong's death, noting that he was the only casualty reported from the incident. The bus was carrying 30 players and officials, authorities said.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) released a statement expressing profound shock and sorrow over Frimpong's death. The GFA extended condolences to Frimpong's family, teammates, and the Berekum Chelsea organization during this difficult time. The association described Frimpong as a promising young talent, highlighting his dedication and passion for the sport.

Frimpong, who joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC earlier this year, had scored two goals in 13 appearances this season. The GFA statement emphasized that his commitment exemplified the league's spirit. The attack on Berekum Chelsea is not an isolated event in Ghana's football history.

The BBC reported that FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities, and AshantiGold have previously reported similar incidents. Local police have deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area. They have stated that they will work to apprehend the perpetrators as quickly as possible, The Guardian reported.
