TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto claims that Indonesia will soon achieve fuel self-sufficiency. If successful, Prabowo says Indonesia will no longer need to import fuel.
He made the claim during his visit to Gorontalo on Saturday, May 9, 2026. "We will soon achieve fuel self-sufficiency. We will no longer import fuel, my brothers and sisters," said Prabowo, as reported by the Presidential Secretariat.
According to Prabowo, Indonesia is a wealthy nation. Therefore, the Chair of the Gerindra Party wants this wealth to be managed and controlled properly by the Indonesian nation itself.
Prabowo stated that Indonesian leaders must not be lazy to prevent the nation's wealth from being controlled by foreigners. "If we are lazy, if our leaders are not honest or do as they please, then our wealth will be taken by other nations, my brothers and sisters," he said.
The retired general emphasized that natural resources in the homeland must be managed by the Indonesian nation, including in the fisheries sector. "We don't want foreign ships to take fish from our seas. We want our people to do so," he said.
This former defense minister also claimed that Indonesia is now gaining more respect in Southeast Asia. He mentioned that it's because of self-sufficiency in staple foods such as rice and corn.
"We have just returned from the Philippines after attending the ASEAN Summit. We are highly respected because we are now self-sufficient in staple foods," said Prabowo.
Prabowo provided examples of several types of staple foods that he claimed have achieved self-sufficiency, including rice and corn. "We have achieved self-sufficiency in many staple foods. We no longer need to import food from abroad," stated the Chair of the Gerindra Party.
He stated that the Indonesian nation must stand on its own two feet. Therefore, he wants his government to achieve self-sufficiency in staple foods and energy.
Prior to visiting Gorontalo, Prabowo first visited the island of Miangas. He visited Miangas after attending the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Cebu, the Philippines.
