Rescuers Find Body of Missing Hiker After Mount Dukono Eruption

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rescuers have found the body of a deceased hiker following an eruption at Mount Dukono in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, Saturday, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

The Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in a statement in Denpasar, Bali, Saturday evening, said that the victim, identified as E, an Indonesian citizen, was found around 2:30 p.m. local time.

According to reports received by BNPB, the victim was found approximately 50 meters from the rim of Mount Dukono's main crater. The victim's body was initially covered in volcanic sand and only became visible after heavy rain washed away some of the material.

According to Abdul, the victim's body is currently at Tobel Regional Hospital, following a cautious evacuation process, considering Mount Dukono's fluctuating volcanic activity and the thickness of the volcanic sand at the scene.

In addition, rescuers have also identified two points of sand deposits strongly suspected to be the location of the other two victims. Both points are within a radius of approximately three meters from where the first victim was found.

"These two points have been marked using GPS coordinates," he said, adding that due to worsening weather conditions and high volcanic activity, the team decided to prioritize the evacuation of the first victim and temporarily halt the search for personnel safety.

Based on the results of today's operational evaluation, the joint rescue team is scheduled to continue combing and excavating the two marked coordinates on Sunday, May 10.

This operation is led by the Head of the Ternate Search and Rescue Office and the Head of the North Halmahera Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

BNPB warned tourists and residents to comply with hiking ban imposed and remain outside the danger zone established by the Geological Agency to avoid further loss of life due to the ongoing volcanic activity.
