TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli forces launched an airstrike that killed seven Palestinians and injured dozens. The attack targeted an apartment and a vehicle in Gaza City on Friday, May 15, 2026.
According to the independent Palestinian media in X, Quds News Network, this Israeli airstrike occurred in the Al-Rimal civilian residential complex. Footage showed smoke billowing and buildings destroyed, causing panic among civilians. Local sources also mentioned Israeli fighter jets targeting a civilian vehicle at the same location.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), as reported by Anadolu citing Al Jazeera, stated that three victims died in the attack on a civilian vehicle. Meanwhile, four others perished due to the building strike in the Rimal residential area, west of Gaza City.
Three women and a child were among the casualties, and at least 45 others were wounded, some critically. "According to eyewitnesses on the ground, the attack used four missiles, causing a building to catch fire," said Ibrahim Al Khalili, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Gaza.
Khalili added that besides causing a massive fire, Israel's attack on the civilian complex also sparked panic at the scene as Palestinians were forced to flee. He explained that the strike location in Al-Rimal was "overcrowded" due to many refugees from the eastern part of Gaza City seeking shelter from a series of Israeli military operations.
Meanwhile, Mahmoud Basel, a spokesperson for the Palestinian civil defense, stated that hundreds of people were residing in the targeted building. "The missile was fired without any pre-warning or notification. We are talking about a number of [dead]. We are talking about a big number of wounded, among them families," Basel told Reuters, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The recent attack coincided with the 78th anniversary of Nakba Day, a moment to commemorate the 1948 Nakba or catastrophe. This commemoration highlights the arrival of Israeli colonizers, seizing their homeland, causing a massive exodus for the Palestinian people.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz claimed that the military operation targeted Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigade's commander, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the Hamas military wing. Netanyahu and Katz mentioned that they targeted Haddad because he was deemed responsible for killing, kidnapping, and injuring thousands of Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers.
They also accused Haddad of obstructing the peace agreement in Gaza initiated by the U.S. President, Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Haddad regarded the peace resolution led by the two imperialist states as an action to disarm Hamas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip.
Citing the Quds News Network page, this recent attack adds to the long list of ceasefire violations by Israeli occupiers since October 11, 2025. Israeli forces continue with daily airstrikes, artillery shelling, vehicle firing, and the destruction of homes and civilian facilities.
The death toll due to Israel's genocide in Gaza since October 2023 has risen to 74,744 Palestinian civilians. On the other hand, Israeli military repression has caused 172,588 others to suffer injuries.
