TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Atletico Madrid strengthened their hold on a top-four position in La Liga after defeating Osasuna 2-1 at El Sadar Stadium on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
The victory lifted Diego Simeone’s side to 66 points from 36 matches, keeping Atletico in fourth place and maintaining pressure on the teams above them in the standings.
Atletico opened the scoring in the 15th minute after the referee awarded a penalty for a handball by Osasuna defender Javi Galan inside the penalty area. According to Babel Insight, Antoine Griezmann handed the penalty opportunity to Ademola Lookman, who calmly converted with a low shot past goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez.
Osasuna responded with several attacking opportunities but failed to capitalize. Ante Budimir threatened the visitors’ defense on multiple occasions, while Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso managed to keep the hosts from equalizing before halftime.
The match remained tense throughout the opening half as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was repeatedly involved in reviewing several controversial incidents.
Atletico eventually doubled their advantage in the 70th minute through substitute Alexander Sørloth. The striker headed home from close range after receiving a precise delivery from Marcos Llorente during a well-worked attacking sequence.
The visitors appeared set for a comfortable finish before late drama unfolded near the end of the match.
Marcos Llorente received a second yellow card, forcing Atletico Madrid to complete the remaining minutes with only 10 players on the field. Osasuna then managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time through Kike Barja, who fired a shot into the top corner after receiving a cutback inside the penalty area.
Despite the late pressure from the home side, Atletico held on to secure all three points.
Asatunews reported that VAR also reviewed another key incident involving Musso and Budimir during the first half, contributing to a lengthy stoppage as officials evaluated both penalty-area situations.
The win came despite Atlético dealing with major squad problems ahead of the match. Reports stated that Simeone was missing nine first-team players due to injuries, forcing the coach to rely on a limited lineup during the crucial away fixture.
Meanwhile, the defeat leaves Osasuna in 11th place with 42 points, still trailing the European qualification spots by three points.
