TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) will host the second round of Israel-Lebanon negotiations at the US State Department on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for Anadolu.
The United States will host the second round of ambassador-level talks between Israel and Lebanon on Thursday, April 23, at the State Department," the spokesperson said.
"The United States welcomes the productive engagement that began on April 14. We will continue to facilitate direct, good-faith discussions between the two governments," said a State Department spokesperson.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Monday that the talks with Israel aim to halt hostilities, end Israeli occupation in southern Lebanon, and ensure the deployment of Lebanese troops to the internationally recognized border.
Since March 2, Israel has carried out attacks in Lebanon, which have resulted in approximately 2,300 fatalities, injured over 7,500 people, and caused more than 1 million people to flee, according to Lebanese authorities.
US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon which began at midnight local time in Tel Aviv and Beirut on Thursday.
Trump also stated on Friday that Washington actively prohibits Israel from carrying out further attacks on Lebanon in line with the newly established ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Friday that Israel intends to maintain control over all the territory it occupies in southern Lebanon during the recent attacks.
Lebanon Ready for Direct Negotiations
Lebanon will continue bilateral negotiations with Israel to end hostilities and restore sovereignty, stated President Joseph Aoun.
"Bilateral negotiations will be led by Lebanon through a delegation headed by Ambassador Simon Karam, and no other party will participate in this mission on behalf of Lebanon or replace it," as stated by the president's office as reported by Antara.
Karam is a Lebanese diplomat who previously held several positions in the civilian government and has experience in international negotiations.
Aoun also had a phone conversation with Trump, who expressed understanding of Lebanon's position and supported efforts to reach a ceasefire and initiate the negotiation process.
"We are faced with a choice: continue the war with all its consequences, or negotiate an end to the conflict and achieve sustainable stability. I choose the path of negotiation," stated Aoun as quoted by his office and cited by VOI.
The statement emphasized that the upcoming negotiations will be separate from other processes, and their success depends on broad domestic support in Lebanon.
Netanyahu declared that the Israeli military will control a buffer zone up to 10 kilometers deep in southern Lebanon, a step that involves annexing Lebanese sovereign territory. He also asserted no intention to meet the demands of the Lebanese group, Hezbollah.
