TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday, May 22, reported the latest developments regarding the hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, with the number of reported cases rising to 12.
In a statement to journalists, as quoted by ANTARA, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the Netherlands had confirmed one additional case involving a crew member who disembarked in Tenerife, Spain, was then repatriated to the Netherlands, and has since been in isolation.
There are currently 12 reported cases and three deaths. No new deaths have been reported since May 2, when the outbreak was first reported to the WHO, Tedros said.
"We continue to urge affected countries to monitor all passengers and crew carefully for the remainder of the quarantine period," Tedros said.
More than 600 contacts continue to be monitored in 30 countries, and a small number of high-risk contacts are still being traced.
Tedros reiterated his gratitude to the countries that have collaborated in the epidemiological response and investigation.
