TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reassured residents of Tenerife as Spanish authorities prepared to receive the cruise ship MV Hondius, which has been linked to a hantavirus outbreak.

The vessel is scheduled to arrive in Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands, early on Sunday morning after several passengers were infected during the voyage.

Tedros stressed that the risk to local residents and the international community remains low despite growing concerns surrounding the outbreak. “The risk for the population of Canary Islands and globally remains low,” he said.

As reported by DW, several countries, including the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), and a number of European nations, are preparing evacuation flights to repatriate their citizens from the ship once it docks in Spain.

Health authorities are also tracing passengers who had already disembarked from the cruise before the infections were confirmed, along with individuals who may have had close contact with them.

Meanwhile, Pedro Sanchez defended Spain’s decision to allow the ship to dock, describing it as both a humanitarian and legal obligation.

According to Sanchez, permitting the operation at the request of the World Health Organization “is a moral and legal duty for our citizens, Europe and international law.”

The Spanish prime minister made the statement after meeting Tedros in Madrid ahead of the ship’s arrival.

Spanish authorities are expected to implement strict health protocols during the docking and evacuation process to prevent further spread of the virus.
