TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bad news arrived at the home of Farid Miftachul Aziz two days before the Idul Fitri holiday, on March 19, 2026. The factory worker at a food can manufacturing plant received a termination notice delivered to his house in Porong subdistrict, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. The reason was brief and clear: efficiency.
“The termination was unilateral because there had never been any negotiation or prior notification,” Farid said when met by Tempo on Thursday, April 30. He then confirmed the news of his dismissal with his co-workers. Farid said nine of his colleagues were also laid off by the company without receiving severance pay or Idul Fitri bonuses.
Farid suspects the dismissal was linked to his activities as a union member. Together with his colleagues, he had often staged protests against the company, demanding wages in line with the regional minimum wage of Rp5.1 million (about US$300).
Before the termination, Farid’s highest salary as a permanent employee had reached Rp4 million (US$235). He said the income barely covered his living expenses, as he supports a wife and child.
