TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Barcelona failed to reach 100 points in the final standings of the 2025-26 La Liga after losing 1-0 to Deportivo Alaves in the 36th week of the league at the Mendizorrotza Stadium in Vitoria-Gasteiz early Thursday morning, Indonesian time.
According to the La Liga website, quoted by ANTARA, Ibrahim Diabate scored the only goal of the match in the 45+1 minute. This result was a crucial victory for Alaves in their quest to stay in the top flight of Spanish football. Meanwhile, for Barcelona, the negative result came after they secured the La Liga title this season.
With two matches remaining, Barcelona sits atop the La Liga table with 91 points from 36 matches. Meanwhile, Alaves has climbed to 15th place with 40 points from 36 matches.
In that match, Alaves, who were trying to avoid relegation, played against Barcelona with great courage. Meanwhile, the guest team, which featured Roony Bardghji, Alejandro Balde, Wojciech Szczesny, Marcus Rashford, and young defender Alvaro Cortes, struggled to find their best playing rhythm.
Barcelona coach Hans-Dieter "Hansi" Flick made eight changes to his starting lineup from the previous match against Real Madrid on Sunday (10/5). This large rotation makes the Blaugrana's game less effective, particularly on the front line. The first chance came just after a minute. Diabate nearly put Alaves ahead early on, but his finish went wide of Szczesny's goal.
Barcelona attempted to respond with several counterattacks. However, midway through the first half, both teams struggled to create clear-cut chances that would seriously threaten the opposing goal.
Alaves, needing a win to move away from the bottom, continued to apply pressure. Their efforts finally paid off just before halftime, in the 45+1 minute. Diabate successfully won a duel with Marc Bernal before unleashing a volley across goal that Szczesny couldn't stop. The goal gave Alaves a 1-0 lead at halftime.
After half-time, Barcelona increased its attacking intensity in search of an equalizer. However, Alaves' disciplined defense thwarted every chance the visitors created.
The Blaugrana continued to press until the final minutes of the match, but no goals were scored. Alaves maintained its 1-0 lead until the final whistle.
