TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited Miangas Island and Gorontolo after attending the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, the Philippines, on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Miangas is the closest island to the border between Indonesia and the Philippines. It is located in the Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi. Meanwhile, in Gorontolo City, Prabowo inspected the Red and White Fishermen's Village in South Leato Village, Sulawesi Island.

The Chair of the Gerindra Party conveyed a number of promises and claims from his administration with Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Prabowo also mentioned that he is the second president to visit Miangas after his predecessor, Joko Widodo.

Here are the facts of Prabowo's visit to Miangas and Gorontalo:

1. Prabowo Claims Indonesia is Respected by ASEAN because of Food Self-Sufficiency

Prabowo claimed that Indonesia is increasingly respected among ASEAN countries because of food self-sufficiency. "We have just attended the ASEAN Summit in the Philippines. We are very respected because we are now self-sufficient in food," said Prabowo as reported by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Prabowo gave examples of several types of food that he claimed Indonesia has produced on its own, so there is no need to import them. He mentioned rice and corn.

The former defense minister stated that the Indonesian nation must stand on its own feet. Therefore, he wants his government to achieve food and energy self-sufficiency.

2. Addition of 3 Smart Boards in Every School

Prabowo said there would be an addition of three interactive whiteboards or smart boards in every school this year. So, each school will have a total of 4 interactive boards after the government distributed an interactive digital whiteboard last year.

Including in Gorontalo, schools have received one smart board. Prabowo also said that the number will be increased. "Starting this year, each school will receive three (smart boards)," he said.

Prabowo claimed that smart boards will be able to help teachers in remote areas. "Teachers in difficult places can be assisted from the center, with their lessons, additional syllabi, and material assistance," he said.

The government, he said, can also monitor all classes throughout Indonesia from Jakarta using smart boards. "So if there are teachers who do not come, we can see which teachers did not come on that day," said Prabowo.

3. Targeting the Completion of 1,386 Fishermen's Villages by December

Prabowo targets the completion of 1,386 Red and White Fishermen's Villages by the end of 2026. "This year, in December, we will officially inaugurate 1,386 fishermen's villages throughout Indonesia," said Prabowo during his visit to Miangas Island.

Prabowo stated that the Red and White Fishermen's Villages will have various facilities for the fishermen. These facilities range from ice makers, access to shrimp seeds, to cold storage that can preserve seafood longer.

In addition, Prabowo said that the fishermen's villages will also be equipped with special fuel filling stations (SPBU) for fishing boats. "We will massively improve the conditions of fishermen throughout Indonesia," said the former Commander of the Special Forces Command.

Prabowo mentioned that one of the fishermen's villages will be built on Miangas Island and is targeted to be completed in five months if construction begins in June 2026. "Hopefully there will be one fishermen's village here in the near future," he said.

Prabowo also highlighted the addition of facilities in Miangas during the era of former President Joko Widodo. In 2016, Jokowi inaugurated Miangas Airport, which had been under construction since 2012.

To continue this step, Prabowo now wants to build facilities to help the fishermen there. "There is already an airport, maybe the fish catch can be marketed to increase their income," he said. Currently, Prabowo said, the government has provided assistance with a 15-gross-ton boat to Miangas.

4. Improve All Puskesmas in Indonesia

The Head of State wants to improve all community health centers (Puskesmas) in Indonesia after inspecting the facilities on Miangas Island. According to him, Puskesmas in Indonesia have not been improved for a long time.

"I saw some Puskesmas earlier, the Minister of Health (Budi Gunadi Sadikin) whispered to me, for so many years, since the time of Mr. Harto (President Soeharto), the Puskesmas have never been improved," he said.

He promised to immediately take care of all Puskesmas in Indonesia. Prabowo claimed that the improvement of health facilities is a government priority.

He also expressed gratitude for being able to see the conditions on the ground such as in Miangas. "Finally, thankfully, I can see everything firsthand and hopefully we will soon improve them," he said.

Prabowo's arrival in Miangas was welcomed by several ministers of the Red and White Cabinet. These include the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.

Also present were the Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and the Vice Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Tandyo Budi Revita.
