TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Israel has launched an investigation after a soldier was seen damaging a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon, an incident that has sparked outrage and drawn condemnation from senior officials.
According to Deutsche Welle, the Israel Defense Forces on Monday confirmed the authenticity of an image circulating on social media showing a soldier striking the head of a fallen crucifix statue with a sledgehammer. The image quickly spread online, prompting criticism and concern, particularly among Christian communities.
The incident reportedly took place in the Christian village of Debl, located near the Israeli border. The photo appears to show the statue already toppled before the soldier proceeds to strike it, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the act.
In a statement posted on X, the IDF said it views the incident with “great severity,” stressing that the soldier’s actions were “wholly inconsistent” with the values and conduct expected of Israeli troops. The military added that the case is being investigated by its Northern Command and is being handled through the chain of command. It also pledged that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against those involved.
The IDF further said it is working with the local community to restore the damaged statue, in an effort to address the harm caused and ease tensions in the area.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by the reports. In a post on X, he condemned the act and said authorities would take “appropriately harsh disciplinary action” against the soldier responsible.
Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also denounced the incident, calling it a “shameful and disgraceful” act. He expressed regret over the damage and extended an apology to those affected.
“We apologize for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt,” he said, adding that he is confident strict measures will be enforced.
