Prabowo to Attend ASEAN Summit, Discussing Iran War Response

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will attend the 48th ASEAN Summit held in Cebu, Philippines, on May 7 to 8, 2026, as confirmed by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang on Thursday.

This year's ASEAN Summit is held under the theme "Navigating Our Future Together," where Southeast Asian leaders gather to discuss regional direction amid global pressures.

According to Yvonne, Prabowo is scheduled to participate in several main agendas, including plenary sessions and leaders' retreat.

"The President of Indonesia has been invited to attend several main agendas at the ASEAN Summit, including the ASEAN Plenary and Retreat Session," she said.

"The summit is focusing on responding to the impact of the conflict between Iran and the United States, as well as energy and food security in Southeast Asia," she added.

Discussing the Impact of the Iran War

Tension between Iran and the United States will be one of the primary topics during the meeting. According to Yvonne, ASEAN leaders will prioritize collective response to the conflict, which has affected the region's economic stability, energy, and security.

In addition, the issue of energy and food security in Southeast Asia will also be a point of focus with the increasing global uncertainty. "This summit will produce several outcome documents related to various issues," Yvonne said.

Indonesia Calls for ASEAN Unity

During the summit, Indonesia will also emphasize the importance of maintaining regional solidarity. The government views the unity and synergy among ASEAN member states as crucial factors in facing increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics.

"In this Summit, Indonesia will echo the key message of unity and synergy of ASEAN amid current geopolitical challenges," said Yvonne.

Before the culmination of meetings between heads of state, ASEAN will hold a series of meetings at the ministerial level on May 7, 2026. The agenda includes the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, ASEAN Political-Security Community Council Meeting, ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting, and the ASEAN Joint Foreign and Economic Ministers' Meeting.

"The series of meetings at the ministerial level will take place the day before, including various important forums in the political-security pillar and ASEAN coordination," Yvonne added.
