TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of people took to the streets of central London, England, on Saturday, April 18th, 2026, for a demonstration dubbed the National Housing Demonstration, demanding affordable housing and rent control.
RIA Novosti reported that participants from dozens of unions, tenant associations, student groups, and other organizations gathered in Soho Square at 1:00 p.m. local time.
They urged the British government to impose rent restrictions and intervene in the housing sector.
The protesters carried banners reading "Homes for people, not profits" and demanding a rent freeze.
Organizers said average rents in the UK have risen by almost a third since the pandemic.
They also complained about poor housing conditions in London and other major cities, where many families live in substandard rental housing.
Furthermore, the UK reportedly has the highest number of homeless people among developed countries.
"Other housing systems are possible. We can get affordable and safe houses," organizers said in a statement, as quoted by VOI.
The crowd then moved to the city center, carrying an effigy of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and banners accusing the government of colluding with property owners.
Dozens of police were deployed to the protest, but no incidents were reported.
