TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology views the rising number of reported sexual violence cases on campuses as a sign of growing public awareness. This also reflects the increasing willingness of victims to come forward and report incidents to university-based task forces for the prevention and handling of sexual violence (PPKPT).
"It indicates the trust of the academic community members who have experienced violence, as they can report to the PPKPT task force at each campus because the trust already exists and is increasing," said Acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) Badri Munir Sukoco at the Complex of the People's Representative Council, Jakarta, on Monday, April 21, 2026.
Badri stated that this year the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology has included the indicators for the prevention and handling of violence as components of the assessment of the performance of university leaders. This policy is believed to encourage the seriousness of campuses in eradicating sexual violence.
According to him, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology has made preventive efforts in accordance with Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation Number 55 of 2024 concerning Prevention and Handling of Violence in the University Environment. He mentioned that all state universities in Indonesia have the PPKPT task force, and 65 percent of private universities also have it.
"Then, in terms of curative measures related to handling cases, whether mild, moderate, or severe from the six types of violence, we have taken action," he said.
On the same occasion, Acting Inspector General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Nur Syarifah stated that there has been an increase in cases of sexual violence on campus from 2021 to 2024. However, she did not specify the number of cases.
Nur Syarifah believes that with the increasing number of task forces at each campus, reports of sexual violence can be better monitored. Consequently, she said, it has contributed to an increased level of reported cases. However, she mentioned that it is also influenced by the courage of victims to report.
"The task forces have also become more active, so the reports are also accumulated, or we obtain information, so overall there is a significant increase in the number," she said.
Several cases of sexual harassment in the campus environment have recently come to light. The Indonesian Education Monitoring Network recorded that from January to March 2026, there were 233 cases of violence, including sexual violence, in the academic environment.
