Snow in May Brings Unseasonably Cold Weather Across Australia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Snow in May is a reality to some parts of Australia as a blast of wintry weather brings together low temperature, gusty winds, and unseasonably cold characteristics. Following the damp start of the week, regions such as Victoria, Tasmania, ACT, southern NSW, and South Australia have been freezing with layers of pre-season blanket.

In the meantime, the cold outbreak is continuing and shaping up to be the strongest snap so far this year, with a mix of showers, hail and heavy winds tracking across the southeast. In response to the singularities, climate experts are forecasting a dry and warm winter across Australia.

What do we know about Australia’s snow in May so far?

Talking with SBS Australia, senior meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology, Robert Urbaniak stated that, “we’ve seen the peak of the cold,” and the temperature is predicted to be “going up tomorrow.”

Even so, damaging winds warnings are issued to safeguard Australians from the perpetual strange weather this year. Urbaniak also listed the potential blizzards and wind gusts of up to 110 km/h in the alpine areas of Tasmania on the premise. Other cold conditions are also moving towards eastern Victoria and inland NSW with a possibility of a chilly, thick frost in the morning.

While the bizarre symptoms concern many Australians, the adjunct professor at Monash University’s School of Earth, Atmosphere, and Environment linked the snow in May as a “not great indicator” of a “bumper snow season.”

Snow in May excite Australia’s popular alpine sites

As many may have predicted, Australia’s snow in May has immersed beyond worried minds. In the southeastern parts of the country, ski resorts are enjoying the overnight snowfall, inviting skiers and spirited crowds to frolic around the areas getting an early coat of snow.

According to The Guardian, some popular ski resorts including Selwyn, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and more are mixing water and cold air to load their snow guns. These alpine fashionable places have also taken to social media to advertise the mountain slopes.

What do the temperatures look like during the snow in May across Australia?

The Bureau of Meteorology published the projected conditions across cities in Australia, as follow:

Sydney : Expect crisp and chilly mornings heading into the weekend, with temperatures ranging from 9C to 23C. Friday will see a cool 9C start before reaching 21C, while warmer afternoons arrive across Saturday and Sunday.
Melbourne : Cooler conditions are set to linger across Melbourne, with daytime temperatures hovering between 16C and 17C throughout the weekend. Mornings will remain brisk, dipping as low as 10C on Friday before slightly milder starts on Saturday and Sunday.

Ultimately, snow levels are expected to drop to around 900 metres, with alpine regions across Victoria and New South Wales forecast to receive up to 20cm of snowfall, 9news said.

As Australia braces for an unusually dry and warm winter despite the snow in May conditions, many are now turning their attention to the possible return of El Nino and what it could mean for the country’s months ahead.
