TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs plans to hold an isbat session on May 17, 2026, to determine the beginning of Dzulhijjah 1447 Hijri and officially announce the date for Eid al-Adha celebrations in Indonesia.
The session is scheduled to take place at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium within the Ministry of Religious Affairs office in Central Jakarta. Abu Rokhmad, the Director General of Islamic Community Guidance, stated that this session is an integral part of the government's mechanism for determining the start of the Hijri month.
"The isbat session is a deliberative forum bringing together the government, Islamic organizations, and experts in astronomy and falak to determine the beginning of the Hijri month," Abu Rokhmad explained during a preparatory coordination meeting, as quoted in a written statement on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Abu Rokhmad further noted that the process of determining the start of Dzulhijjah integrates the hisab method (astronomical calculation) with rukyat (crescent moon observation). These two approaches complement one another to produce a comprehensive and authoritative decision.
According to Abu, hisab data provides the initial position of the new moon, while rukyat serves as factual confirmation through direct monitoring at various observation points across Indonesia. "This approach ensures that the decision is not only rooted in scientific data but is also confirmed through field observations," he said.
The isbat session will commence with a seminar on the position of the new moon, presenting astronomical data from the Ministry’s Hisab Rukyat Team. This seminar will be broadcast openly to ensure public transparency. Following the seminar, the committee will receive reports on the results of the rukyatul hilal from observation sites spanning the archipelago from west to east.
"Then, the Minister of Religious Affairs will preside over the session, weighing the considerations of the participants before officially determining the start of Dzulhijjah," he added.
Preliminary data presented during the preparatory meeting indicate that the position of the new moon on the 29th of Dzulkaidah 1447 Hijri meets the MABIMS visibility criteria. "Calculations show the height of the new moon is above 3 degrees with an elongation exceeding 6.4 degrees; thus, in theory, it meets the criteria for potential observation," he said.
However, Abu emphasized that this data remains predictive and does not yet serve as the basis for an official determination. "The official start of Dzulhijjah still awaits the results of the observation and the final decision of the isbat session as the state’s official authority," he clarified.
The results of the session will be announced via a press conference to serve as a collective reference for the Muslim community in Indonesia. "Regarding the exact date of Eid al-Adha, we urge the public to await the formal results of the isbat session on May 17, 2026," said Abu.
According to the 2026 calendar, Eid al-Adha is expected to fall on May 27, 2026.
